    The two-year apprenticeship is to designed to teach the Apprentice to assist journeyman operators and/or operate a wide range of press and finishing equipment: web press, sheetfed presses, letter press, folders, cutting systems, saddle stitchers and small finishing equipment. The ideal candidate is detail orientated, has a strong mechanical aptitude and a continuous improvement mindset. This is a full-time, paid position to prepare for a career as a machine operator.


    Learning Objectives:

    • Interpret and follow direction from a work ticket
      • Interpret layouts and ticket information
      • Check that correct paper is issued and the correct count
    • Assist with equipment make ready and set up, including:
      • Mounting plates and other items needed to process work
      • Overall set up of the equipment, such as sheet size, coatings, blankets, etc.
      • Checking work against layouts, proofs and ticket information
      • Wash ups between jobs
    • Fill out necessary paper work and records (check list, maintenance log, stock usage, etc.)
    • Monitor product quality
    • Trouble shoot and perform adjustments and repairs as needed
    • Assist with operating: D8 Web press, Komori, Heidelberg & Mitsubishi sheetfed presses, stitcher, folders, die cutters
    • Set up and operate: Duplicators, letter press, cutters
    • Assist in the general upkeep of the department:
      • Install, clean and adjust rollers
      • Assist in the maintenance and cleaning of the equipment and surrounding area
      • Keep area free from pallets, skid and skid tops
      • Remove waste paper, ink and solvents


    Skills & Educational Requirements:

    • Ability to read a ruler
    • Basic math skills
    • Ability to work in a fast paced production environment
    • Ability to work well with co-workers in a team environment
    • Ability to operate computer based technology
    • Self-motivated with strong mechanical trouble shooting abilities
    • High School education or equivalent professional experience

    Physical Requirements:

    • Constant standing and/or moving around
    • Ability to ascend steps
    • Manual dexterity
    • Frequently lift up to 40 lbs.
    • Occasionally lift up to 70 lbs.
    • Frequently squat or kneel
    • Frequently bend
